Floor Transfers and Fall Recoveries
If you are attempting to lift and transfer a loved one from the floor to a sitting position with the Smart Life Vest, please follow these steps. Depending on the severity of the situation, there are two procedures, one being for a single caregiver, and the other being for two caretakers. Do not attempt to lift a fallen loved one by yourself if the task calls for two people.
One-Person Transfer
  •  Fit the Smart Lift Vest to your fallen loved one. (Please see fitting instructions.)
  •  Have the fallen person bend his/her knees and apply the fulcrum/knee belt just below knees.
  •  Place your furthest leg from the target (i.e. chair, bed, wheelchair) between your loved one's feet. Press your shin against his/her knee using it as a fulcrum for leverage.
  •  Your other leg should be positioned between your loved one and the target, alongside the fallen person, and close to the front handles of the vest.
  •  Keeping your back straight, pull the fallen person into a crunch position.
  •  On the count of three, in one continuous motion, step back with your outside foot, keeping pressure on the knee belt with your inside leg.
  •  Last, pull the handles on the vest to stand your loved one up.
  •  Once your loved one is standing, pivot him/her to the target, and gently set him/her down
Two-Person Transfer
  • Fit the Smart Lift vest to your fallen loved one. (Please refer to fitting instructions.)
  •  Attach the Smart Lift floor leads to the upper O-rings on the front of the vest.
  •  Have your loved one bend his/her knees as much as possible.
  •  Block his/her foot from sliding with your inside foot; have the other lifter do the same.
  •  Keeping your backs straight, pull your loved one into a crunch position with the Smart Lift floor leads.
  •  Grab the front handles of the vest with your inside hands, keeping the lead strap in the other hand.
  •  On the count of three, both lifters should step back with their feet closest to the fallen person's hip, and pull using their leverage to stand him/her up.
  •  Gently transfer your loved one to the designated target (i.e. wheelchair, chair, bed).
Seat Transfers
When transferring a loved from the sitting position, from one seat or target to the next, please follow these steps when using the Smart Lift Vest. Common examples of this type of lift and transfer from one target to the next include: from wheelchair to toilet; wheelchair to bed; walker to bath chair.
  • Fit the Smart Lift Vest and apply the knee belt. (Please see fitting instructions.)
  •  Move your loved one's feet slightly apart and pull his/her foot closest to the target forward.
  •  Put your loved one's other foot back slightly.
  •  Position him/her and transfer target so the pivot will be a quarter turn.
  •  Place your foot, the one furthest from the target, between your loved one's feet, and press your shin into the fulcrum/knee belt.
  •  Place your other foot, the one closest to the target, behind you and in a broad stance.
  •  Grab the front handles of the vest and count to three to help prepare your loved one for the transfer.
  •  On the count of three, pull back and transfer the weight from your front leg to your back leg. While turning your loved one, set him/her gently down onto the target. Position him/her as needed.
Car Transfers
The car transfer is a lift and transfer procedure that can be applied to many situations. For example, the Smart Lift Vest can be used with a loved one moving from a vehicle to another vehicle, a car to a wheelchair, or a walker to car. Please follow these steps when performing a vehicle transfer.
  • Fit the Smart Lift Vest. (Please refer to fitting instructions.)
  •  Apply breaks on the wheelchair.
  • Apply the knee belt, if needed, and position your loved one's feet for the transfer.
  • Encourage your loved one to move his/her head forward and down during the transfer into the vehicle.
  • Position yourself for a stand and pivot.
  • Grab the front handles of the Smart Lift Vest and count to three. This will help prepare your loved one for the transfer.
  • On the count of three, lift your loved one, perform the pivot and place him/her in the car.
  • Assist your loved one by placing his/her legs into the vehicle.
  • Remove the Smart Lift Vest and secure the seat belt.
  • *Reverse these steps to remove patient or loved one from the vehicle.
Fitting Instructions
Fitting the Smart Lift Vest
This video instructs a caregiver, first responder or healthcare worker on how to properly fit the Smart Lift Vest to their loved one or patient. The first half of the video demonstrates how to fit the vest to a person in a seated position. The second half of the video exhibits how to apply the vest to a person in a supine position/on the floor.

  • Make sure the base of the vest is at waist level of your loved one or patient.
  •  Clasp the person's hands together, with hands higher than their elbows.
  •  Position the arm pads directly under your loved one's or patient's forearms.
  •  Tighten the cross and frontal straps.
Fitting Knee & Waist Belt
The Smart Lift fulcrum/knee belt is optional. The knee belt may be used for a fallen loved one or patient on the floor; someone needing to be lifted and transferred from a seated position; or someone being moved to and from a vehicle. The knee belt offers additional leverage for transporting a larger or bariatric patient. It is most often used with patients who cannot stand during the transfer without their knees buckling.

  •  Always connect the knee belt to your loved one's or patient's knees.
  • Place the padded section in the front of the person's legs.
  • Tighten the knee belt, allowing 3-4 inches between your loved one's or patient's knees.
